Physical abuse or neglect can result in serious injury or even death. Broken hips, other broken bones, bed sores and open wounds are common examples of preventable injuries. They should not happen and almost none would happen if the elderly patient didn't suffer abuse or neglect.

Every nursing home patient, in Massachusetts, at least, has a safety plan. Safety plans are established on admission. If the safety plan is proper in the first place and if it is properly followed, there would be no injury.

Many times an injury to as elderly patient may not be noticed. General complaints of "an aching," even coupled with a sudden behavioral change may not be recognized as symptoms of a broken rib, for example. And often, the nursing home can be very reluctant to send the patient to a hospital for a complete check up.
